Sleeping bag gifts

A sleeping bag makes a great Christmas present, but only if it suits the person. Here's how to get it right without asking them, with lab-rated picks for every kind of camper and budget, sizing tips and returns periods.

A sleeping bag is one of the best Christmas gifts for campers, because it's the piece of kit that decides whether they sleep or shiver. It's also easy to get wrong. Buy one too cold and it sits in a cupboard; too heavy and they'll never carry it. The trick with a sleeping bag gift is to match it to how the person camps, not to the price tag.

We compare 47 sleeping bags sold in the UK. Every pick below has a lab-tested comfort rating, so you know how warm it really is, and we've included the returns periods and posting dates that matter when you're buying for someone else.

How to choose a sleeping bag gift without asking

You don't need to ruin the surprise. Three clues tell you most of what you need:

  • When do they camp? Summer only, a bag rated comfortable at about 4 °C is plenty. Spring to autumn, choose 0 °C or lower. Winter, -5 °C or lower. Our guide to how to choose a sleeping bag explains where these numbers come from.
  • Do they carry it? Hikers and wild campers care about weight, so a light down bag is worth the money. For campsites and car camping, a heavier, cheaper synthetic bag is fine.
  • Do they feel the cold? If they're always first to reach for a jumper, choose a bag rated about 3 °C warmer than you otherwise would.

Best all-round gift, and for Duke of Edinburgh

Decathlon Simond MT500 0 °C

Warmth
Comfort 0 °C
Weight
1.45 kg
Packed size
39 × 21 cm
Fill
Silicone-coated spiral polyester fibre wadding

Duke of Edinburgh expeditions mostly run from spring to autumn and involve carrying everything. The MT500 0 °C has an ISO comfort rating of 0 °C and weighs 1.45 kg, light for a synthetic bag at about £80. Synthetic fill copes well with a damp tent.

Reasons to buy

  • Cheapest lab-rated 0°C mummy in the range
  • Synthetic fill tolerates damp UK conditions

Reasons to avoid

  • Roughly 520 g heavier and much bulkier than MT900 0°C down
  • No independent review of this exact model found

A sensible gift for a teenager starting their award. If they'll camp in April, add a good mat. It's sold by Decathlon only, which helps with returns (see below).

2

Best for wild campers and hikers

Mountain Equipment Helium 400

Warmth
Comfort 0 °C
Weight
820 g
Packed size
24 × 21 × 20 cm
Fill
700 FP duck down, 403 g fill

If they carry their bag, every gram counts. The Helium 400 has an ISO comfort rating of 0 °C at just 820 g, with 700 fill-power duck down and box-wall baffles. Its magnetic hood closure works one-handed with gloves on. It's about £240 and stocked by Trekitt, Cotswold Outdoor and Mountain Equipment.

Reasons to buy

  • Good balance of warmth, weight and value
  • Magnetic Lode Lock hood/collar closure works one-handed and with gloves
  • Smooth, well-baffled side zip and box-wall construction with no reported cold spots

Reasons to avoid

  • Slim alpine fit may not suit larger builds
  • Duck rather than goose down, and no hydrophobic treatment

The gift a keen hiker will actually use for years. The slim cut won't suit broad shoulders, and down needs keeping dry.

3

Best for family camping

Vango Nitestar Alpha 350

Comfort -1 °C
Weight
1.93 kg
Packed size

Vango Insulite Alpha, offset double-layer construction

For campsites and car camping, warmth for the money matters more than weight. The Nitestar Alpha 350 has an ISO comfort rating of -1 °C, enough for April to October, for about £40. That's the warmest bag we compare under £50.

Reasons to buy

  • ISO 23537-1:2022 lab-tested comfort -1°C / limit -7°C for around £40-50 street price - the warmest bag in this set per…
  • Same DofE Recommended Nitestar Alpha platform as the 250: offset double-layer construction, insulated shoulder and zip…
  • Widely stocked by independent UK camping retailers at well under RRP

Reasons to avoid

  • 1.93 kg is heavy for backpacking and DofE carrying; Advnture's review of the smaller Nitestar 150 notes the synthetic…
  • No independent editorial review of the 350 found; Vango direct is out of stock until February 2027

Great value for a family that camps through spring and autumn. At 1.93 kg it's too heavy and bulky for hiking.

4

Best for festivals and summer camping

Vango Nitestar Alpha 250

Weight
1.6 kg
Packed size
Not stated by maker
Fill
Vango Insulite Alpha, offset double-layer construction

A cheap, cheerful gift. The Nitestar Alpha 250 has an ISO comfort rating of 2 °C, which is more than enough for June to September, and Vango's offset double-layer fill avoids cold spots along the stitching. It's about £40 and widely stocked.

Reasons to buy

  • Lab-tested ISO 23537 comfort 2°C / limit -4°C at a sub-£50 street price
  • Retailer customer reviews praise compressibility, price/performance, draft collar and adjustable hood
  • DofE Recommended and widely stocked, with a 250S short version for smaller users

Reasons to avoid

  • 1.6 kg is heavy for backpacking at this warmth level
  • No independent editorial review of the 250 found; only retailer customer feedback

Ideal for festivals and summer campsites, where bags get muddy and sometimes lost. At 1.6 kg it's for carrying from the car, not up a mountain.

5

Best for someone who feels the cold

Decathlon Simond MT500 -5 °C

Orange Decathlon Simond MT500 -5 °C synthetic sleeping bag
Warmth
Comfort -5 °C
Weight
1.65 kg
Packed size
41 × 23 cm
Fill
Silicone-coated spiral polyester fibre wadding

The cheapest lab-rated winter warmth we compare. The MT500 -5 °C has an ISO comfort rating of -5 °C, warm enough for UK winter nights and cold sleepers in spring and autumn, for about £80. To spend more and save weight, the Rab Ascent -12 °C has the same comfort rating at 1.35 kg for about £306.

Reasons to buy

  • Warm with no cold spots even when partly wet
  • Large shoulder baffle and soft fabric; robust and reliable
  • Very low price for a -5°C comfort bag

Reasons to avoid

  • Heavy and bulky at 1650 g / 16 L for size L
  • Advnture test may be an earlier MT500 -5°C version

A warm, good-value present. At 1.65 kg it's best for campsites and short walk-ins rather than long trails.

6

The splurge

Alpkit PipeDream 400

Alpkit PipeDream 400 down sleeping bag
Warmth
Comfort -4.2 °C
Weight
770 g
Packed size
25 × 18 cm
Fill
750 FP duck down, 400 g fill

For a gift that covers almost the whole year, the PipeDream 400 has an EN comfort rating of -4.2 °C at 770 g, warmer and lighter than the Helium. It uses 750 fill-power duck down with a PFC-free water-resistant treatment, and costs about £275.

Reasons to buy

  • Light and warm for the weight, packs down very small
  • Excellent value for a hydrophobic, RDS-certified down bag
  • Soft, comfortable fabric and good warmth for its weight

Reasons to avoid

  • Regular length runs short; Advnture suggests Long for anyone over about 185 cm
  • Single front-only shoulder baffle and no women's-specific version

Our favourite light bag for March to November. Only Alpkit sells it, and its 123-day returns window is handy for a gift. Choose the Long if they're over about 185 cm.

  • Full-length 2-way zip opens fully as a quilt

Reasons to avoid

  • Comfort 8°C / limit 5°C: summer, festival and caravan use only
  • 2.3kg and 48 x 29 x 29 cm packed; no written reviews on the maker page

Spending more mostly buys a lighter, smaller bag rather than a warmer one. For someone who camps from the car, the under-£100 picks are as warm as many bags costing three times as much.

Getting the size right

Sleeping bags come in lengths, usually Regular and Long, and each brand lists a maximum height. There's no shared standard: Therm-a-Rest's Regular is for people up to 183 cm, and Ferrino's up to 185 cm. As a rule of thumb, if they're around 6 ft (183 cm) or taller, choose Long. A bag that's too short squashes the fill at the head and feet, and a slightly long one is only a little heavier.

Returns and posting dates

  • Decathlon: 30 days to return unused items, or 365 days for Decathlon members if the membership is scanned at purchase.
  • Alpkit: 123 days to return unused items for a refund.
  • Other online shops: you normally have at least 14 days to cancel an online order after it arrives. Our Black Friday guide explains your rights. Many retailers extend returns over Christmas, so check the shop's own page.
  • Keep it unused and in its packaging. Returns usually require that, so tell them to try it indoors first.
  • Royal Mail's last recommended posting dates for Christmas 2026 are 18 December for 2nd Class, 21 December for 1st Class and 23 December for Special Delivery Guaranteed.

Stocking fillers for campers

  1. 01

    A sleeping bag liner

Keeps the bag clean and adds a little warmth. There's no standard test for liners, and Sea to Summit estimates its liners add up to 4 to 8 °C at best, so treat any figure as a rough guide.

  2. 02

    A foam mat

The cheapest way to sleep warmer. Mat R-values add up, so a foam mat under an air mat makes a summer mat work in colder months.

  3. 03

A dry bag or compression sack

Keeps a down bag dry in a rucksack and squeezes it smaller. Useful for anyone who hikes or bikepacks.

Frequently asked questions

Is a sleeping bag a good gift?+

Yes, for anyone who camps, hikes or goes to festivals, as long as it suits how they camp. Match the comfort rating to when they camp and choose down if they carry it. Buy from a shop with a long returns window in case it's not right.

What sleeping bag should I buy as a gift if I don't know what they need?+

A bag with a lab-tested comfort rating of about 0 °C covers most UK camping from May to October. The Decathlon MT500 0 °C at about £80 is a safe choice, and Decathlon gives members 365 days to return unused items.

What are good Christmas gifts for campers under £50?+

The Vango Nitestar Alpha 350 is the warmest bag we compare under £50, rated comfortable to -1 °C for about £40. For summer and festivals, the Vango Nitestar Alpha 250 at 2 °C is about the same price. A liner, foam mat or dry bag also make good small gifts.

What's the best sleeping bag gift for a wild camper?+

A light down bag. The Mountain Equipment Helium 400 is rated comfortable to 0 °C at 820 g for about £240. For more warmth, the Alpkit PipeDream 400 is rated to -4.2 °C at 770 g for about £275.

Should I buy a Regular or Long sleeping bag as a gift?+

Regular bags usually fit people up to about 183 to 185 cm, depending on the brand. If they're around 6 ft (183 cm) or taller, choose Long. Check the brand's size chart before you buy.
